On May 27, the Joint Meeting of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for the Energy and Water Sectors began. The event was chaired by Minister João Baptista Borges, who highlighted the significance of discussing and preparing crucial issues for the committees’ review and approval.

In the energy sector, the discussions focused on progress since the last ministerial meeting, energy supply security, and advancements in SADC’s Priority Areas for the Sustainable Development of the Regional Energy Sector. The Proposal for the Development of a Regional Infrastructure Financing Facility (RTIFF) was also a key topic. Other subjects included the analysis of the Agreement amending the 1996 SADC Energy Protocol, regional regulatory initiatives, and the promotion of renewable energy sources, as well as the establishment of SACREEE as a legal entity.

In the water sector, ministers evaluated the progress of regional initiatives aimed at improving water and sanitation services, cross-border water projects, and the development of regional infrastructure. They also discussed the implementation of the regional groundwater program and combined water, energy, and food initiatives.

Founded in 1980 and restructured into the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in 1992, SADC is composed of sixteen member states. The joint meeting will be preceded by an experts’ meeting from May 27 to 31, 2024.
